Staycation 2013 – ‘Know your local flora’ Greening Godalming guided walks

During this summer’s Staycation we’ll be running a series of gentle guided walks around the local area where you’ll get the chance to learn more about the plants on our doorsteps.

Monday 5th August – riverside and meadow plants, local trees and flowers

A leisurely 2-hour walk starting at 10.00 a.m. at the canal side opposite Farncombe Boat House on Catteshall Road. Map Reference SU 974442. This is close to the Mill Medical Practice.

Tuesday 6th August – local geology and the flora, trees, shrubs and flowers of chalk grassland

A leisurely 2-hour walk starting at 10.00 a.m. in Newlands Corner Car Park, outside the Visitor Centre. Map Reference TQ043492. You can get there by going to Guildford and taking the A246 towards Leatherhead. Turn right onto the A25 towards Dorking. At the top of the hill, turn right into Newlands Corner Car Park.

Wednesday 7th August – heathland and its management, bog plants and history of the flora since the ice age

A leisurely 2-hour walk starting at 10.00 a.m. in Elstead Moat Car Park, Thursley Common. Map Reference SU899415. Go to Elstead, turn left after the Pack Inn towards Thursley. After the houses end, find Elstead Moat Car Park on the left.

Thursday 8th August – woodlands and their plants, managing woodlands for wood fuel, history of conservation, invasive plants and old yew trees

A leisurely 2-hour walk starting at 10.00 a.m. in the car park at Hydon’s Ball. Map Reference SU979403. Take the Hambledon road from Busbridge and turn left up Clock Barn Lane. The car park is in front of you at the junction with the Hydestile to Dunsfold Road.
